We have never been very good at posting a daily family vlog. Raising five kids, and working multiple jobs, while serving in full-time ministry, takes up a lot of our time. Some day's are just about life and making sure the kids get to where they need to be, and mom and dad got to where we needed to be. It wasn't always ideal to be running around with a camera.

But we enjoy sharing parts of our family life with our small community of followers, and because of that, we keep trying to post something that encourages families. Most of what we do vlog comes from vacations or the holiday's. Nothing wrong with that, except it doesn't lead to consistent vlog content.

We may not be daily family vloggers, but this Christmas, we have so much we want to share! So much, we might be posting new Christmas content every day through the new year!

Here's what to look forward to...

Every year, we countdown the days to Christmas with our Advent Calendars. Throughout the years we have used LEGO Advent Calendars, bouncing between Star Wars, Harry Potter, and Friends themed calendars. All the bouncing around has left us with a couple of "missing" years.

Well, this year we are trying to catch up by opening both some of the missing years AND this years calendars. We have LEGO Star Wars from 2020, LEGO Harry Potter from 2020, LEGO Friends from 2020, and LEGO Friends from 2021! We also have two, brand new calendars, Elf and A Christmas Story, which we are very excited about.

Yes, that's 6 Advent Calendars! And if we can swing it, we're still hoping to get the 2021 versions of LEGO Star Wars and LEGO Harry Potter.

How in the world are we going to open all six calendars? Well, check out tonights vlog to learn how we plan on opening and sharing our calendar countdown! Click on the graphic below to watch the vlog!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Or, Happy Day AFTER Thanksgiving! After all, it is Friday! Either way, we hope you and your family and friends had a wonderful Thanksgiving day!

Thanksgiving day in the Higham House was great. Amy and Jay were up early getting the turkey and the stuffing ready so we could put it in the oven on time. Aside from a few dinner items such as homemade dinner rolls, fresh corn off the cob, and the gravy, most of our dishes were already in prepped and in the fridge. Although, it felt like we were washing dishes for most of the day!?

It was a great day! The food was awesome, the games were fun, and our time as a family was filled with laughter, good conversation, and stories of years past.
It has become kind of a tradition to vlog our Thanksgiving Eve and our Thanksgiving day. Like so many other moments in family life, being able to capture these sweet, holiday memories has truly become a treasure for us. As the kids grow, we are able to look back, watch, and listen the special times in our family life. And, we are more than happy to share our day with you.

So let watch this years, Life in the Higham House Thanksgiving Special! Then scroll down for our menu, list of games, and some final thoughts!

This year's menu...

Amy and the kids did an amazing job with the food. As is our tradition, the kids each help Amy with a different part of the meal prep. However this year, we recognized that with our kids getting older, working, and having moved out, there are few dishes that Amy has to make without the kids help. But the hope is that in the future, we'll be able to gather together as a family (perhaps a little bigger by then) and be able to share once again in the dinner prep. We'll see what happens.

Any who, let's get into this years menu!
APPETIZERS...
This year we wanted to be a little more aware of what we were making and eating. Usually, we go overboard with our food and make and eat way too much. So, we kept it simple.
  • Shrimp with cocktail sause
  • Veggie Tray
  • Kettle Chips
  • Pretzel Thins
  • French, Ranch, & Everything Bagel Dips
We also decided to have a later breakfast/brunch in place of breakfast and lunch. The appetizers helped fill the gap between brunch and dinner.

DINNER...
Dinner was the full traditional spread you might expected on Thanksgiving. We have fallen in love with our holiday favorites and have no problem enjoying that each year.
  • Turkey (cooked in the oven)
  • Sausage stuffing
  • Potato Casserole
  • Greenbean Casserole
  • Cranberrys (both fresh and from the can)
  • Corn off the Cob (from our summer corn stock)
  • Layered Jello
  • Homemade dinner rolls
Everything came out delicious. Amy and the kids really did do a great job.

It's time to order
your Christmas Tees!

For dessert we enjoyed a homemade pumpkin pie, a pumpkin roll we picked up at the groceries store, homemade Christmas cookies, and an absolutely gorgeous (and delicious) Bailey's Cheesecake that Amy makes. Seriously, it is amazing!!!

We were thinking about sharing the recipes for our Thanksgiving dishes, but aren't sure if anyone would be interested in them. If you would like to see our recipes, let us know in the comments, we think it would be fun to post them for you.

Family Game Time...

Last year, we started playing organized games as a family. Now we have tried board games in the past, but our kids really aren't board game kids. But we started including some simple, Minute To Win It style games, as a way to keep the kids from hiding in their rooms or on the devices and more connected through the day.

This year, since a couple of the kids had to work, we decided to play the games after dinner, so everyone could play and have fun. Here's the run down.
GAME TIME...
  • Ping Tac Toe
  • Moving Up
  • Separation Anxiety
  • Rapid Fire
  • Spoon Frog
These games were great, a mix of skill and luck (though, we think mostly luck) that everyone could play. If you're familiar with the TV show, Minute To Win It, you'll recognize those games. If not, don't worry, we'll share the details in a blog post in a week or so. Anyone of these games would be ideal for your next family gathering! (We will cross link the games and the instructions when we post next week or so.)

And just to spice the games up a bit, Amy picked up a bunch of prizes for our winner!

THANKSGIVING, A TIME
TO REMEMBER

Yes, the kids had to work. Yes, our oldest is in another state. But it was still a great day! Another Thanksgiving for the scrapbook of family life. Believe us when we say, we treasure these times. We've talked a lot on the blog about how fast the time has gone, and how quickly our kids are growing up. it seems that while a lot of people say, "it goes by fast..." no one really prepares you for it.

We get all wrapped up in the getting by, and we forget to stop and enjoy the moment. We say, "Remember the good ol' days..." but "these are the good ol' days." These are the days, the moments, the memories that matter. The laughter. The smiles. The joy. Making the most of times like these is what matters most.

We hope that you and your family had a wonderful Thanksgiving, and that you took time to be thankful for all that God has, is, and is continuing to do in your life.

We are grateful for you. We may have a small audience of support, but we are grateful for everyone who watches a vlog or reads a post! And, we're thankful that we have an opportunity to share the good things God is doing in our family, our lives, and our ministries! We are truly blessed!

Happy Thanksgiving Week!

This is one of our favorite weeks of the year! This week we celebrate Thanksgiving! We are really looking forward to Thursday, Thanksgiving, and spending time as a family.

We want to start this week by having some fun. We're sure by now that you've probably heard Matthew West's, Thanksgiving song called, Gobble Gobble. Matthew writes this Thanksgiving song to offer us something for the Thanksgiving holiday.

It's bit of a goofy song, but a lot of fun!

So let's have some fun and get this week rolling with Matthew's Thanksgiving song, Gobble Gobble!

Enjoy!
