Guess who's back? It's a daddy/daughter project as we build a rabbit hutch for our bunny.
Breya's little bunny is doing great. But we've talked a lot about breeding her and raising bunnies for sale. But before we get to any of that, we need to build a future home. So Breya and I are building a rabbit hutch.

It's a simple design, a lean-to shape about three feet of the ground. It will have hardware cloth floor, front, and side, while the nesting box and rear wall will all be enclosed for protection from the elements. Once done, it should also be predator "proof."

This was such a great project. Breya and Jay worked together to build the hutch, but to be honest, Breya ended up doing most of the work. She learned how to use power tools, make measurements, cut, and assemble. She did a great job.

Here is part one of our build project. Let's go!

Watch the Vlog

The build was easy and inexpensive. With the exception of some pressure treated 2x4s, hardware cloth, and some hardware, we used recycled pallet wood for our build. Pallets are a great resource for your small, backyard farm builds. From hutches to chicken coops and tractors to garden boxes and even DIY projects for your home, pallets are super useful.

In many cases, pallet wood is free. There are plenty of businesses that receive their products by pallet. Often these pallets are discarded if damaged or non-returnable. I have a couple locations near where we live that leave broken or damaged pallets out for anyone to come and pick them up. These locations leave them in an area that is marked, "FREE PALETS."

If you go looking for pallets, be sure to ask the management or look for a designated area where they stack discarded pallets. Many businesses will stack pallets that get picked up and reused by the shipping companies. So be careful where you doing your picking.

Stay tuned for part two and the big reveal!

Time to make pickles - Round 1 - We've picked over 20 cucumbers and pickles from our garden. Now it's time to make some pickles. Round one of our pickle making process. Let's go!

watch the vlog

We really enjoy canning vegetables that come directly from our garden. So to take a bunch of cucumbers and pickles and turn them into pickles is great. How do we do it? We'll show you.

set up & prep

Couple things you need to do to set up and getting for your canning. It's a good idea to gather these supplies and ingredients together before you start your process. Pots need to be filled with water and heated. Jars need to be cleaned and sterilized. Knives need to be sharpened. So before we get to slicing and jarring, get your space set up.

You'll need the following items and ingredients:
Supplies...
  • Large pot for hot water bath
  • Non-Aluminum pot to mix ingredients
  • Whisk or something to stir with
  • Pickle Mix or Ingredients (We use a mix that comes with all the ingredients needed. All we add is water, vinegar, and any other special instruction. If you want to use a recipe, we suggest visiting our Pinterest page for some ideas and recipes.)
  • Jars, lids, and rings
  • Clean cloth & a couple towels
  • Canning Funnel
  • Stainless steel Jar Lifter
  • Jar Wrench (optional)
  • Canning Tongs (optional)
  • Labels to mark your jars
  • If you're looking for a starter kit with everything you need to begin canning, click here: Canning Starter Kit.

With all of your supplies gathered, take a few minutes to set up your space. You'll need an area to slices the cucumbers and pickles. You'll want a place to fill jars and a place to rest jars after the hot water bath.

We also suggest you get your water bath ready early. It might take some time to bring the water to a boil.

Step One: Washing

Picture
First thing we do is wash the cucumbers and pickles. We fill up one side of our sink with water. Then one by one, with a clean scrubber, we wash the cucumber and pickle. You want to make sure you get any dirt or insects off your cucumbers. Once washed, we set them on a towel to dry.

Step two: slicing

Picture
With a sharp knife, slice your cucumbers. We slice our pickles as chips and spears. Those are our favorite ways to eat our pickles. In the past, and probably in one of our future picklings, we'll slice a sandwich cut.

Step Three: The Mix

Picture
Take your ingredients and begin mixing, cooking, and bringing your ingredients to the point that it is ready to be added to the jars. We use Mrs. Wages canning mixes. Almost everything you need is in the mix. Depending on the mix you might have to add vinegar or sugar, so be sure to read the instructions.

step Four: Fill Jars

Picture
With the pickles slices and the mix ready, fill the jars. Because we make our pickles for us and for friends, we don't weigh or measure or count how much we put into each jar. We just fill them to the ring lines. The cucumbers will shrink a little, so we try to pack them in.

Then using your funnel, pour your pickling mix into each jar, leaving space at the top for air and for the jars to seal. Don't fill to the top of the jar. Before applying the lid and ring, take your clean cloth and wipe the edge of the jar, removing any liquid or mix. You will want your jar to seal, so make sure the lip of the jar is clean.
Picture

Step Five: WAter bath

Picture
Picture
With you water bath boiling and using the jar lifter, carefully place your jars in the water. Leave space  between the jars. Allow the jars to rest in the boiling water for 10 minutes.
When 10 minutes have passed, use your jar lift to carefully remove the jars from the water.
We will tip the jar to remove any water from the top of the jar, then place the jars to rest.

You'll want to give your jars a couple hours to cool, seal and rest. Put them in a place where they can rest and not be disturbed. We let our jars rest over night.
Picture

Set six: Label & Store

Picture
With the jars cooled and sealed, label your jars. You can mark the lids with a marker, or apply a sticker to the jar. Why mark them? Well, you want to remember what's in each jar, especially for you make a variety of flavors or items. For instance, we made kosher dills and bread and butter pickles. But we are make a few other flavors, so marking or labeling will be helpful when we go to grab a jar off the shelf.

This was only round one of our pickling process. We still have plenty of cucumbers and pickles growing in the garden so we'll need to pickle again soon.

What other flavors should we try? Like we said, we've made kosher dill and bread and butter. We want to make a spicy pickle as well. But what flavors should we make? Let us know in the comments below.

Thanks so much for watching

Week 1 of our new series, Stand Firm, was amazing. Pastor Joby, set the tone for what is going to be a don't-miss-series. This week, Pastor Joby tackles the Belt of Truth.

What is the Belt of Truth? What's it for? How does it help us?
How do you out on the Belt of Truth?
Pastor Joby teaches us this and more.

So let's look at our key scriptures, then listen as Pastor Joby brings us The Belt of Truth.

The Armor of God
10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. 14 Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth...
Ephesians 6:10-14a ESV

The Truth Will Set You Free
31 So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, 32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” 33 They answered him, “We are offspring of Abraham and have never been enslaved to anyone. How is it that you say, ‘You will become free’?”

34 Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin. 35 The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son remains forever. 36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. 37 I know that you are offspring of Abraham; yet you seek to kill me because my word finds no place in you. 38 I speak of what I have seen with my Father, and you do what you have heard from your father.”

You Are of Your Father the Devil 39 They answered him, “Abraham is our father.” Jesus said to them, “If you were Abraham's children, you would be doing the works Abraham did, 40 but now you seek to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God. This is not what Abraham did. 41 You are doing the works your father did.” They said to him, “We were not born of sexual immorality. We have one Father—even God.” 42 Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love me, for I came from God and I am here. I came not of my own accord, but he sent me. 43 Why do you not understand what I say? It is because you cannot bear to hear my word. 44 You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father's desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies. 45 But because I tell the truth, you do not believe me.46 Which one of you convicts me of sin? If I tell the truth, why do you not believe me? 47 Whoever is of God hears the words of God. The reason why you do not hear them is that you are not of God.”
John 8:31-47 ESV

Week two Bumper Video

Week TWo Message

Sermon Text:
Isaiah 59:17; John 8:28-43; 14:6; Romans 7; 12:1-2;
Ephesians 6:10-14; 1 Timothy 3:16; Hebrews 4:12; 2 Peter 1:16-21

consider these questions

Read Ephesians 6:14, John 8:31-47; 14:6.

What stood out to you in the sermon this week and what did God reveal to you in the Scriptures, maybe for the first time?

What does it mean to put on the belt of truth? 2) Why is the "belt of truth" mentioned first among the pieces of the armor of God?

How do you “fasten the belt of truth” and wrap yourself in Jesus?

What’s the difference between “practicing sin” and “struggling” with sin?

In what areas of your life are you redefining your sin to rationalize it--twisting God’s Word or ignoring His Truth to fit your life/desires?

Read John 8:42-43.

According to Jesus you cannot divorce God the Father from God the Son. To deny Jesus is to deny God. Share how you would respond to someone who is offended when you say Jesus is the only way to God.

Our enemy is a liar, trying to get us to doubt the Word of God, the worth of God, and the work of God. Take out your Stand Firm newspaper (click here to read it on our app) and look through the “lies and truth” section. Which lies do you sometimes believe?

Starting today, how will you combat those lies with the Truth of God--girding up your loins for the battle?

Merry Christmas in July! It's July 25th, Christmas in July. We are just 5 months away gathering with our families, ripping open presents, enjoying wonderful foods, and celebrating all that makes Christmas special. In today's post we're remembering Christmases past. Let's take a look at some of our Life in the Higham House Christmas Specials!

There's nothing like waking up on Christmas morning. The joy and excitement, the anticipation and expectation; the laughter, surprise, and wonder, it's amazing! We love our Christmas morning traditions. We read the Christmas story from Luke 2. We open gifts. We enjoy our Christmas brunch. And, we build LEGOs. It is a day that we look forward to every year. Our hope is that this will be our tradition for a few more years.

Christmas Special 2016

This year, Christmas fell on a Sunday, and Jay was preaching, so Christmas had to wait until after Sunday services. This was our second year to vlog Christmas as a family. All the kids were still living at home. It was such a fun day. Enjoy!

Christmas Special 2019

2019 was a year of transition. Jay had accepted a new ministry role at a church in West Virginia. The job began June 1st, but we had a hard time finding a house so we weren't able to move until October. Because of the new job and the transition, we didn't vlog very much, but we wanted to capture Christmas morning. Let's go!

Christmas Special 2020
A Covid Christmas

2020 was a Covid Christmas. While things were open and life was slowly returning to normal. That Christmas we had Christmas Eve services online, which gave us an entire day to be together, which meant, some Christmas Eve traditions looked a little different. But all the kids were home and we had such a sweet time. And, it snowed! We had a Winter Christmas! We couldn't have asked for very much more. Enjoy Christmas 2020.

Last Christmas we stepped into some new traditions. As our kids become adults and begin their own lives and families, we're learning how to make space for spouses, grandkids, careers and work schedules. It's actually pretty exciting. While we don't know what the future holds, we're looking forward to Christmas 2024.

Will we return with another year of the Life in the Higham House Christmas Special? Yes, yes we will. And we can't wait!

Thank you to everyone who reads the blog and watches the vlog. We are so grateful for your support and encouragement. We look forward to sharing more with you as the years go on.

Merry Christmas in July! Can't wait for Christmas 2024!

Happy Christmas Eve in July! It's July 24th, Christmas Eve in July. Welcome back to our special Christmas in July series, as we look back at Christmases past and some of our favorite Christmas traditions and fun.

On Monday, we share one of our most favorite Christmas and Advent traditions, Jotham's Journey. For years, our tradition was to gather the kids together and read the daily Advent reading as we counted down the days to Christmas. There are four amazing stories books that help families think about the coming of Jesus, and prepare for Christmas day. If you missed Monday's post, please take a minute to go back and read it. And order the books and begin a new tradition with your kiddos this coming Advent season.

Since it's Christmas Eve, we thought it would be fun to pull up a few of our Christmas Eve vlogs. Christmas Eve is a fun and crazy time as we get ready for church services, bake cookies, wrap last minute gifts, and share in the Christmas Eve Traditions. Here are three of favorite Christmas Eve's in the Higham House!

Christmas Eve 2015

It all began in 2015. The very first, Life in the Higham House, Christmas Special went live! At the time, the Christmas special included both Christmas Eve and Christmas morning. Later, we split the two into separate vlogs. But here we are, kicking off our Christmas Eve in July flashback with a jump back to 2015, and our very first Christmas special. Wow, it seems so long ago.

Christmas Eve 2019

Christmas Eve 2022

It's fun to look back at these vlogs and see how the kids have grown from year to year. These holiday moments are so special for us. And these vlogs are treasures as we remember the blessing from year to year. Christmas is a time that we hope will always be filled to laughter, wonder, celebration, and family.

Thanks for sharing in these memories with us!

Today, we are taking a few minutes to look back at some of the Christmas fun. Traditions, activities, travels; these moments have become lasting memories for our family. Thankfully, we captured these time on video and shared them on our family vlog. We love going back and watching this memories.

We embedded three of our favorite memories to share with you. But please feel free to go through and watch more of our Christmas vlogs.

Christmas Road Tripping - 2018

In 2018, we jumped into the family to the Expedition and we hit the road to visit with family in Baltimore, MD and Philadelphia, PA. It was a fun and crazy trip with adventure, silliness, and tons of laughter. Looking back we wished we would have made this trip more often, but when we did make the trip, it was super special. We hope you enjoy this little look back at Life in the Higham House, 2018.

Christmas Lights 2017

Christmas Lights. We love them. Well Jay and Breya love them, everyone else just tolerates them. Seriously, we really enjoy Christmas lights. Whether they are on a tree, a house, or a drive-thru Christmas experience, we look forward to visiting our favorite Christmas lights. In 2017, we drove out to a park in Clinton, PA where the community comes together to create quite the lighted spectacle.  Join us as we head out to see the Clinton Christmas Lights!

Christmas 2021 Road TRip to Philadelphia

In 2021, we took another road trip east to visit with our families in Baltimore and Philadelphia. While in Philly, we made our way to the Philadelphia Art Museum. It's gorgeous location. But this trip turned into something extra special. We added to the family as Nate proposed to Amaris! That's right, we got to witness his proposal and her yes! Check it out!

These memories are great, but we have soo many more! If you would like to see more, jump over to YouTube channel, YouTube.com/@lifienthehighamhouse, where we have created a special playlist with all of our Christmas memories and fun! And be sure to check back in on Wednesday for more Christmas fun!

Christmas in July - 2024

Welcome to day 2 of our Christmas in July celebration. All week long we are sharing some of our favorite posts, vlogs, and Christmas fun from over the years. Yesterday we kicked off the celebration with our 2023 living room decorating vlog. Today, we want to bring back a blog post that shares one of our most favorite Christmas traditions.

When the kids were younger, we read a set of books that helped us  move through the Advent season towards Christmas. This series has become a treasure, having read each book with our kids. We continue to promote and share these books hoping that you and your family would come to love this Advent tradition.

Take a few minutes to read our original post from last November 2023. If the idea of these book encourages you, we would invite to you to order the series. Simply click on the book covers to over from Amazon. As you know, we are Amazon Affiliate Partners. When you purchase products that we recommend and share, using the links we provide, we receive a percentage of the purchase, at no additional cost to you.

Now, let's get to today's post!
Picture
A number of years ago, the Higham family was introduced to an exciting Advent tradition. While serving as the youth pastor, our friends from the church asked if we had ever read a book called, Jotham's Journey, by Arnold Ytreeide. Of course we had not. But they said that this beloved story was an Advent must for their families.

As the Christmas season approached, a family in the church shared their copy of Jotham's Journey with us. We started Advent and we began reading the first book of this 4 part series. Unfortunately, that year, our kids were still a little too young, and had a hard time finding interest in the story. The stories themselves included an intense glimpse of how life might have been during that time. There's suspense, drama, emotional moments, and cliffhangers that will keep the family on the edge of your seats. But by the next year, are kids were ready and we tried again. Success!

Advent is all about preparing for Christmas and the arrival of the Christ-child. From lighting candles to sharing in various devotions, the idea of having some kind of family Advent tradition is nothing new. But these adventurous storybooks help to reimagine the Nativity Story that helps the family prepare for Christmas morning.

Jotham's Journey was the first storybook we read as a family during Advent. Each chapter serves as a daily reading to be shared with the family. Each chapter stretches the adventure, leading both Jotham and the reader on an amazing journey. Within a couple of chapters our kids were hooked. Suspense, mystery, adventure, sword fights, good guys, bad guys, and edge-of-your-seat cliffhangers make this series an exciting must read Advent tradition. And it's been our tradition ever since.

We love these books and we want to share them with your family this Advent season!

Jothan's Journey

Picture

The first book we read was the original, Jotham's Journey. It's the beginning of the story. We meet Jotham, a 10 year old boy growing up in Israel, who gets separated from his family. His adventure leads him to encounter thieves, robbers, and kidnappers, wise men, shepherds, and innkeepers until at last he finds the most treasured of treasures.

As this is book one, we would suggest you begin with Jotham's Journey. It really does kick off the adventure. Click on the book cover on the right to order your copy from Amazon.

Bartholomew's Passage

Picture
[ affiliate link ]
Bartholomew's Passage, is the second book in the series of storybooks by Ytreeide. In this book we meet Bartholomew, a young boy who's village is destroyed by Roman soldiers. Like others from his village, Bartholomew finds himself a slave to a tyrannical master. But Bartholomew escapes and becomes friends with a man named Nathan. The adventure leads Bartholomew on an exciting journey that eventually crosses paths with our young friend, Jotham.

Like Jothan's Journey, you can expect some intense moments.
Click on the book cover on the right to order your copy from Amazon.

Tabitha's Travels

Picture
[ affiliate link ]
In July of 2010, Ytreeide released his third Advent book, Tabitha's Travels. Structured the same way as Jotham's Journey and Bartholomew's Passage, Tabitha's Travels, follow Tabitha and her family on their own amazing journey. Crossing paths with our  friends, Jothan and Bartholomew, Tabitha experiences an exciting journey that leads her to the Messiah's birth.

Because this book intersects both Jotham's and Bartholomew's stories, we recommend you read Tabitha's Travel's after you read the other two books. You can order your copy of Tabitha's Travels by clicking on the book cover to the right!

Ishtar's Odyssey

Picture
[ affiliate link ]
In 2015, we ordered the fourth book in the Advent series, Ishtar's Odyssey. Ytreeide, continues the adventure through the eyes of the ten-year-old son of a Persian wise man. Drawn by a new star in the night sky, Ishtar joins his father and the caravan as it sets out across the desert. Following ancient manuscripts and prophecies, along with the path of the new star, Ishtar learns of the arrival of a new king.

His journey eventually crosses paths with our friends Jothan, Batholomew, and Tabitha. This was such a great edition to the series, and brings a new perspective to the nativity story. Click on the book cover to order, Ishtar's Odyssey.

Advent is an important part of the Christmas season. It helps to prepare our hearts for the arrival of the Christ-child. This year (2024), Advent begins on Sunday, December 1st. It would be great to think through what your Advent will look like. Daily devotions, candle lighting,  calendars, and LEGOs, there are plenty of ways to celebrate and prepare. If you would like to use the Jotham series with your family, now it the time to order your books. You can order using our Amazon affiliate links from this page. Because we are Amazon Affiliates, we earn a percentage of the sale without any additional cost to you. This percentage earned, helps to keep Life in the Higham House up and running.

If you have any questions about the series or Advent, or if you have a Advent tradition you practice with your family, we would love to hear from you! Please leave a comment below! If you are looking more Advent or Christmas ideas and fun, be sure to click on these links!

This past weekend, The Church of Eleven22, kicked off their new, 9-week series called, STAND FIRM.
Based out of Ephesians 6, Pastor Joby, introduced the series and called us to war.

Ephesians 6:10-14, reads...
"10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. 13 Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand."

Over the next 8-weeks, Pastor Joby (and the teaching team from COE22) will unpack what it means for us to daily put on the full armor of God. Each week we will look at another piece of the armor, learning how we can ready ourselves to stand firm against the enemy and his schemes. If there is ever a time to ready ourselves for battle, it is now.

We were incredible moved, challenged, and encouraged by week one message. So, like the BE FREE series, we're going to share the messages and resources with you. Our hope is to encourage you to stand firm on the truth that we know never fails.

Each Thursday, for the next 8-weeks, we will post the weekly message video, the Deepen podcast episode, the disciple group study questions, testimony videos, and any other resources that are abled to be shared publicly. We want to invite you to joins us each Thursday, as we learn how to STAND FIRM.

Watch the message

consider these questions

Read Ephesians 6:10-13; 1 John 2:15-16; Genesis 3:1-7.

What stood out to you in the sermon this week and what did God reveal to you in the Scriptures, maybe for the first time?

How does the idea that we are in a spiritual war make you feel?
 - Pause, and pray right now, to understand the spiritual war we are in without falling into either extreme.

Reflect on this quote from Pastor John Piper, “Prayer is primarily a wartime walkie-talkie for the mission of the church as it advances against the powers of darkness and unbelief.” How can this perspective transform your prayer life? (See Isaiah 30:21; 2 Kings 6:17; Matthew 4:1-11; Ephesians 3:16; 6:10-18; 1 John 4:4.)

Read Ephesians 6:12.

We wrestle against
"the rulers, authorities, and cosmic powers of this present darkness." How do you recognize these forces showing up in your daily life?

Your enemy is not flesh and blood. How does knowing your true enemy change how you interact with people who oppose or hurt you?
  1. What are the schemes of the enemy?
  2. What does Satan want you to question?

The enemy knows how to attack you and twist God’s word subtly.
  1. How do you use scripture to stand against the enemy?
  2. What scriptures have helped you do this?

Read 2 Corinthians 10:4.

How are we called to fight this war?

Read Ephesians 6:10 and 2 Corinthians 12:9.

Share a time when you relied on
God’s strength rather than your own.

Read Revelation 21:1-7.

How does this promise of future victory give you hope and motivate you to stand firm in your faith today?

try this weeks action steps

A Disciple...Loves All People, Discovers Identity in Jesus, Deepens Relationship with Jesus (LEADERS: Please copy and paste the action step into your group chat each week.)

1. Throughout the week, identify the lies you hear and the negative thoughts you have that align with the enemy’s schemes (John 10:10). Write down scriptures you can meditate on and use to fight back. Share them with your group next week.

2. Get a partner in your disciple group. Commit to praying for one another daily. Share your struggles and victories in the spiritual battle, supporting each other in prayer and encouragement.

Welcome to week 6 of the Galatians: Be Free series at The Church of Eleven22.
This week we are going to speed up the series. Instead of posting one sermon a week, we are going to post daily messages to complete the series. The series wrapped up on Sunday, July 07, 2024. It was such a great series; so helpful, encouraging, and gospel centered. With the series complete, we have created a special page with all 14 messages from the series. Click on the link below or at the bottom of this post.

QUESTIONS TO CONSIDER

Read Galatians 2:15-21and Romans 3:23. What stood out to you in the sermon this week and what did God reveal to you in the Scriptures, maybe for the first time?

What do these verses show us about the character of God and what does it show about your part in your salvation?

What does it mean to be declared justified?

Sometimes we only preach half the gospel, that Jesus died for our sins. How does your understanding of justification help you share the WHOLE gospel with yourself, a new believer and an unbeliever?

What does it mean to be crucified with Christ?

Share a time when Jesus and the Holy Spirit working in you led to you or others seeing a positive change in your thoughts, desires and actions toward sin.
