Guess who's back? It's a daddy/daughter project as we build a rabbit hutch for our bunny.
Breya's little bunny is doing great. But we've talked a lot about breeding her and raising bunnies for sale. But before we get to any of that, we need to build a future home. So Breya and I are building a rabbit hutch.
It's a simple design, a lean-to shape about three feet of the ground. It will have hardware cloth floor, front, and side, while the nesting box and rear wall will all be enclosed for protection from the elements. Once done, it should also be predator "proof."
This was such a great project. Breya and Jay worked together to build the hutch, but to be honest, Breya ended up doing most of the work. She learned how to use power tools, make measurements, cut, and assemble. She did a great job. Here is part one of our build project. Let's go! Watch the Vlog
The build was easy and inexpensive. With the exception of some pressure treated 2x4s, hardware cloth, and some hardware, we used recycled pallet wood for our build. Pallets are a great resource for your small, backyard farm builds. From hutches to chicken coops and tractors to garden boxes and even DIY projects for your home, pallets are super useful.
In many cases, pallet wood is free. There are plenty of businesses that receive their products by pallet. Often these pallets are discarded if damaged or non-returnable. I have a couple locations near where we live that leave broken or damaged pallets out for anyone to come and pick them up. These locations leave them in an area that is marked, "FREE PALETS." If you go looking for pallets, be sure to ask the management or look for a designated area where they stack discarded pallets. Many businesses will stack pallets that get picked up and reused by the shipping companies. So be careful where you doing your picking.
Stay tuned for part two and the big reveal!
