We have been waiting all summer for this week! Seriously. I don't think we look forward to anything as much as we look forward to our summer vacation. And this year, we are so excited to be back in Bethany Beach!
It's something that the family has really grown to look forward to. I mean, we've always looked forward to vacation, but, in the last couple of years, the kids have really gotten excited about our time at the beach. And, we love it. This year was no different. We have been looking forward to our time in Bethany for months. But, it's finally here, and we're loving it!
This year, we decided to drive through the night. It's about a six and a half hour drive for us to come from Western PA to the edge of Delaware. But driving through the night, we avoided significant traffic complications, specifically as we crossed the Bay Bridge outside of Annapolis, MD. The bridge is often a slow spot as hundreds of beach goers make their way across the Chesapeake Bay bound for shore points on the East. Even with lanes restricted to one lane in each direction, we weren't hindered much.
We arrived just before sunrise, quietly unloaded the vehicle, and moved into our temporary home for the next 7 days. After a couple hours of sleep for the drivers, we were loading up the Expedition again and on our way to the beach! It was windy and cloudy, with a few sprinkles, but we were on the beach!
After a while, the clouds started looking a little more threatening. And since the waves were pretty rough, we decided we'd head back to the townhouse and splash in the community pool. So we loaded up and made our way back to the house. But we wouldn't be at the pool for very long. The dark clouds followed, and after a couple rumbles of thunder, we were drying off and calling it a day. It was probably a good idea as it was getting late and we had our family draft night scheduled for this years fantasy league.
This is the third year for our family fantasy league. Logan scheduled our draft for the evening, so Amy and I thought we'd make an event out of it with pizza, beer (root beer that is), wings, and the draft! We did an online draft for the first time, making our draft super easy and quick.
Grotto Pizza, a tradition in the OC/Delaware shoreline, was our dinner as we chose our teams for the 2018-2019 season. The food was good. The draft was great. But we were exhausted. After driving for almost seven hours through the night, spending a couple hours on the beach, running from storm clouds, we were ready to call it a day. So we did.
We excited for the week ahead. Our time at the beach is always an opportunity to unplug from life and ministry, and enjoy time together as a family. And over the years, we've learned to be more relaxed and flexible, not packing our week with activities, but taking each day as it comes. With the kids all getting older, how we spend our time is changing. The kids are content to hang out at the beach all day. In the evenings, we just do whatever. And it's good.
As is our tradition, we're vlogging our week at the beach. We love capturing those moments on video, telling the story of our family. And we love sharing our adventures, so vlogging it is. You can see what we're up to by visiting our YouTube channel called, Life in the Higham House. Each day we'll load a vlog sharing whatever experiences we have.
