Last Wednesday, Amy and I had the amazing opportunity to hear our baby's heartbeat for the first time. While this is our 6th child, there is still something special about hearing your baby's heartbeat for the first time! Yes, we've been down this road 5 other times, and I can say that with each time, that moment when you hear the flutter of the heart...well, it's emotional.
Having had three miscarriages, the news of being pregnant again came with some anxiousness. Early into the first trimesters, Amy and I were both a little apprehensive, wondering if we would lose this one as well. Mind you, we weren't trying to get pregnant. So to discover we were, well it really was a surprise. And while we were excited, in the back of our minds we couldn't help but think of the realities that this one too might be lost. So the first couple of months, we decided to keep the baby a secret. We did this for a number of reasons. 1. We were concerned of a miscarriage. 2. We had just moved and started a new job, so timing was a bit difficult. 3. We worried what the response might be from family, friends, the church, and our new community. As it is, we often get looks when all 7 of us go some places. And we know that some people think we're absolutely crazy. But, let me say...we have been absolutely blown away by the overwhelming response and support that we have already received since releasing our announcement video last Wednesday. ( Click here to watch our announcement vlog.) So many of you; our family and friends, have shared congratulations and well wishes! And our new church family, well, there's quite a buzz around here. So we are truly feeling blessed. Amy and I truly treasure the idea of FAMILY. We believe it's part of the ministry that God has called us to. I think it's why God has blessed us with a larger family. Why Amy has been able to stay home to raise our kids. Why I am still in student ministry. Why Amy has just a huge heart and ministry to moms and women. Why we have decided to share our lives through blog (www.TheHighamFamily.com) and vlog (Life in the Higham House). Our family is our story of how God is actively working in our lives; constantly teaching us, humbling us, showing us our need for His presence, and reminding us of just how deep is grace and love run. Sure, it hasn't always been easy. We have had our challenges. But God is faithful. And it's that faithfulness that we hope to share with you. We would like to invite you to continue to follow along with us as we share our story. Our desire is to encourage other families to chase after the story that God has written for them, wherever it may lead. So whether you come from a large family or a small family, know that we love you, and that what we share comes from the context of our story. If what God is teaching us is helpful and encouraging for you and your family, then praise God! And to everyone who has offered your love and support for baby number 6, thank you!
