Today, we are reposting a blog that Amy originally wrote and posted back on December 21st, 2012.
There has been a lot of change since then, but the truth and challenge of living by faith is still real and relevant. We hope you find some encouragement in today's blog!
...for we walk by faith, not by sight.
2 Corinthians 5:7 ESV
What does it mean to live by faith and not by sight? I've heard this scripture for as long as I can remember. I can honestly say that I am actively learning what this really means.
I am excited to share with you that God is revealing this to me daily and it is beautiful! It has been another wild week for us filled with ups and downs. The last 2 days I have had the privilege to babysit for 2 of our former camp counselor staff and what a joy that has been! Monday as Jay was bringing our oldest 2 home from basketball. I was with the other 3 at another basketball game. He was barely able to make it into the driveway with our older van. I had noticed a leak stain on the garage earlier that day and phoned him to tell him. My old self would’ve freaked out and thought the worst. While my mind went to the worst possible scenario (we would have to live with 1 car for awhile because this one died), I quickly squelched that and Jay and I prayed, thanking God for this opportunity to see His hand at work without knowing what the outcome would be.
We did believe that God would work it all out. We had heard from the car mechanic on that it may be just some hoses, and while no one wants a car bill right before Christmas, we prayed and trusted God with it. We told the mechanic to make the repairs. When we picked up the van, we came home to a check from a dear friend that covered the amount for the repairs! She had no idea our car was being fixed or that we would need it, but felt God calling her to share what He had recently blessed her with.
God is faithful. The cool thing about this is I can see how He has allowed us to move to different places and build relationships with so many dear brothers and sisters in Christ through the years. Sure, we could’ve stayed in any one of the places we have worked and been content , but we would’ve missed out on so much of what God wanted us to learn. We also would’ve missed out on seeing how he would weave our lives back into the lives of others and all for HIS glory.
This morning, I received a phone call from my dear husband at 4:40 AM. Now if you know me at all, you know that I love my sleep! The Lord knew that when He gave me 5 babies who all slept through the night at a young age! Anyway, he said he either ran out of gas or his car really wasn’t fixed and he was stranded. Again, the old me would’ve been mad and complained selfishly about why I have to get up and go find some gas and take it to him at 4:45 AM. I can honestly say because of God at work in me, that I saw it as a privilege to serve him. Thankfully with a little gas and a jumped battery he was on his way again. As I was riding home, my heart turned to praise as I got excited about the extra time to spend with the Lord this morning! That would NOT have been my response in the past
You see I have learned that when my heart is full of praise to the LORD for ALL things good and bad, I am able to see His power and glory all around. Whether it’s in His provision of a friend dropping off food, or a coffee, or my children’s sweet faces as they share exciting things about their day, or a phone call of encouragement from a friend, or a rusted out hose in our car, or a frustrating conversation with one of our teenagers. I am learning to choose to see God’s hand and praise Him through it all- even if I can’t physically see the good right at the moment. It is a matter of learning to live by faith and not by sight!

Welcome back for week five of our series, STAND FIRM.
This week, Pastor Brit takes us to Ephesians 6:16 16 "In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one;" The Armor of God 10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. 14 Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. 16 In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; Ephesians 6:10-16 ESV WEEK FIVE BUMPER VIDEOWEek five messageSermon Text: Acts 1:8; Romans 10:5-15; Ephesians 6:15 consider these questions
Read Ephesians 6:16 and Hebrews 11.
What stood out to you in the sermon this week and what did God reveal to you in the Scriptures, maybe for the first time? SPIRITUAL WARFARE: This sermon series is about spiritual warfare where we are commanded to take up the armor of God. Pastor Britt shared his recent supernatural encounter with God and said, “You won't have an encounter with God unless you put yourself in a position to do so.” What are some practical things you can do to put yourself in that position? THE ATTACKS OF THE ENEMY: Read Matthew 12:25; James 1:5-8 and Genesis 15:1. Part of Satan’s attack is to divide us and sow seeds of doubt. What are the doubt-filled questions the enemy is bombarding you with? The flaming darts of the enemy include - fear, bitterness, rejection and lust. If you were your enemy, how would you take you out?
THE SHIELD OF FAITH: Discover: Read Genesis 15:1. Where in your life are you complacent, apathetic or just going along like everyone else without getting God involved and raising your shield?
Deepen: Share how you’ve experienced God as your shield and protector (as Pastor Britt shared how his dad’s police badge/shield protected him). What steps can you take to ensure you're always prepared to use the shield of faith?

This Sunday starts what many commonly refer to as Holy Week. Simply put, Holy Week is the final days of Jesus' earthly ministry which include his arrest, trial, crucifixion, burial, and resurrection on Easter Sunday. It all kicks off this Sunday with Palm Sunday.
As we get ready for the events of Palm Sunday, Holy Week and Easter weekend, we wanted to offer some resources that we hope might help you and your family prepare and celebrate this special season of the year. So stating this Sunday, Palm Sunday, and continuing through Easter Sunday, we will be posting a daily blog with a Holy Week Family Devotion. With each devotion we will share a short thought, a family friendly activity, a video or videos, and resources that you can use with your kids.
If you are from a traditional church that utilizes the Liturgy and the church calendar, you might be familiar with Holy Week. But if you are new to the faith, church, or you attend a more non-traditional church, you might be wondering what Holy Week is and why it's such an important week.
You might also be wondering why I used terms like traditional and non-traditional church. Well, a traditional church might be a church associated with a denominational connection. These would be churched that refer to themselves as Presbyterian, Methodist, Lutheran, Baptist, of Catholic. A non-traditional church might consider themselves as non-denominational or independent. Traditional churches generally, maintain or follow a Liturgical or church calendar that marks specific seasons, celebrations, and/or sacred days throughout the year. Some non-traditional churches choose to step away from those "traditions." Whether traditional or non-traditional, what's most important is that the church stay faithful to the gospel of Jesus Christ while maintaining Biblical teaching.
But what is Holy Week, and how do I share this with my kids?
That's a great question. As we've said, Holy Week marks the week between Palm Sunday, when Jesus enters Jerusalem to cheers and palms while riding the colt of a donkey, and Easter Sunday when he is raised from the tomb to life. Consider these two videos. The first, the video just above, is from the question and answer website of GotQuestions.com, an online resources that answers questions relating to the Bible, church, God, Jesus, the Holy Spirit, and faith. They do a great job explaining Holy Week, also known as Passion Week.
The second, the video below, is from Phil Vischer's, What's In the Bible, video series. Phil is the creator of VeggieTales and What's In the Bible, a video series that teaches kids the Bible. In the video below, Phil and his friends talk about Easter and the importance of what Jesus did for us on the cross. The video is crazy helpful and great to watch with your kids.
Hopefully you now have a better understanding of what Holy Week is, and why we take time to reflect and celebrate the events of this week. If you still have questions I would suggest you reach out to your pastor, youth pastor, or kids pastor and ask them to help you better understand Holy Week.
If you are not connected with a church, feel email us here at Life in the Higham House. We would be happy to help you in any way we can. You can also leave a question in the comments below! Be sure to join us starting this Sunday, as we begin Family Devotions for Holy Week! Then check in with us every day through Holy Week for the daily devotion. Each day's post will go live at 9 AM EST. It's going to be a great week. Happy Easter! - jay & amy
