The 2016 Christmas Door Challenge
I remember as a kid in school, decorating our classroom doors at Christmas time. It was one of the ways we would celebrate the Christmas season. Each class thought up a theme, then decorated the door according to the theme. It was a fun project and a great way to celebrate Christmas.
I wanted to bring that same fun and creativity to the family. So Amy and I decided to hold a little contest and invited our kids to decorate their bedroom doors for Christmas. Four out of the five kids did it! So we decorated our door, too. Our hope was to have a way for our kids to have a little creative fun, while participating in a friendly contest. (We're not opposed to a little competition within our family.) You can watch our vlog here, The Christmas Door Challenge 2016, and read our blog post here, The Christmas Door Challenge 2016.
We had so much fun with the challenge that we wanted to fine tune it and share it here on the website as a fun idea for families! So here is how you do, The Christmas Door Challenge!

Simple RulesWe kept the challenge simple. We told everyone that they could decorate the doors however we wanted, using various craft, paper, or household items. Likewise, we could use any inspiration that we found. That means we could look on the internet, Pinterest, or something we saw somewhere in someone elses decorating. But whatever the dreamt up, they had to create. (We did offer a little help to our youngest. The rest of the kids though, were on their own.)
We gave a couple of days for the kids to decorate their doors. While we were hoping to get it all done in two days, we found that it took a bit longer because we ran out of a few supplies. It ended up taking about week for all the doors to be completed. Adults can do this too! Jay jumped into the action and decorated the door to the master bedroom. So parents, don't shy aware from participation. Get involved and have fun WITH your kids. |
The IncentiveWe really wanted this to be a family activity that invloved everyone. Our hope was that each kids would take on a door and create a Christmas work of art. And while we didn't force our kids to participate, we did encourage them with a little incentive.
Like I said before, we don't mind a little competition in our house. So we're okay offering a little incentive to whoever might win. In our case, we asked our readers and our vlog followers to vote for their favorite door. Their votes would indicate a winner of our challenge. That winner would then receive the incentive! The incentive could be anything; an extra gift, a special privilage, double the desserts, whatever. Just make it fun! |
