Discipline and the Bible
As we work through how we discipline our children, we plan to share what we are learning. Not just through the blog, but by sharing resources that have helped us better understand God's word and how it is applied to our parenting. We will share those resources below here.

Raising children is a big task. It takes time, patience, energy, consistancy, forgiveness, love, compassion, grace, and on and on the list could go. But regardless of the adjective, raising children is the role and responsibility of the parents. God gave us the family unit not just as a situation that makes for great sitcoms, but to be a picture of His grace, mercy and love. And within the context of the family, there is one great big hurdle that all parents must overcome. Discipline.
Opinions abound when it comes to discipline. Dozens of books have been written dealing with philosophies, theories, and methods. From considering the personality of the child to the way the respond, from time outs to firm "talking to's". Discipline is a vast ocean of ideas and practices. But our interest is in what the Bible has to say about discipline. What does the Bible teach us when it comes to disciplining our children? We might be a bit surprised to discover that the idea of discipline is a little different than we thought. In fact we think the Bible has a lot to say when it comes to raising and disciplining our kids. In this ongoing series, we share what we are learning and practicing as we study God's word. We want our time with our kids to be full of wonderful, positive memories, especially as we think about how we discipline our kids. So we are rethinking the normal parenting modes of discipline and instead working to apply these Biblical principles as we raise and instruct our kids. We know this won't be easy. But we believe if we can teach our kids and be better at parenting our kids, then when they're older, they too will be better parents for their kids. Discipline and the Bible - Part 1Raising kids is serious business. As parents, none of us should take the responsibility of rearing kids lightly. Much is riding on the shoulders of moms and dads in terms of expectations, accountability, and even judgement. So to consider something as serious a discipline, we need to be well versed in what disciple is and how to properly apply it.

Something like, 'If you do that, this will happen.' Or do you just deal with it in the moment? Something like, 'Well now you're grounded!' As I look at the Bible, I think there is process to the work of discipline.

As a parent, I really don't like putting restrictions or punishment on the kids. But carrying out the discipline to it's fullest extent is super important. That means that whether you like it or not, discipline must include consequences.

In the introduction of this series, the second thought that I shared was the realization that the Bible needs to be the source for discipline. That if we as parents hope to discipline our children in a godly way, we must look towards the Bible as our first source of Truth and Godly wisdom.
